What Is Texas Holey Rock And How Is It Used?

Texas Holey Rocks, as most keepers of African Cichlid are aware, serve as a buffer to help maintain water hardness and alkalinity in aquariums. Water and chemical sculpturing of this rock has occured over eons by nature, resulting in the presence of large and small holes, caves and crevices that, when placed in aquariums or terrariums, are perfect protection and play areas for fish and marine animals of all types. Because of their holey nature these rocks vary greatly in weight for a given size rock, and average around 0.027-0.030 pounds per cubic inch. Texas Holey Rock comes from a large limestone formation that was formed over the eons in a specific limited location in the Hill Country of central Texas.

Texas Holey Rock is very hard to come by, and national retail and wholesale distributors are extremely low in stock if they can find it at all. Many of the rock providers have gone out of business or sold off their property to housing developers. Because of this scarcity,  Texas Holey Rock is now selling for around $3 to $8 a pound in pet shops and aqaurium dealers. Prices will probably continue to rise in the upcoming months because of the low numbers of field finds across the Hill Country collection areas.

Is Texas Holey Rock A Common Item?

No. Not at all. But it is very much sought after. Texas Holey Rock can only be found in certain sections of the Texas Hill Country, northwest of Austin, Texas. And the supply is limited because of the great amount of physical labor involved in harvesting, cleaning, and preparing the rock. At present Holey Rock is in very short supply at most retail shops and that influences pricing.

How does Texas Holey Rock Balance Alkalinity?

The limestone nature of Holey Rock allows very slow release of alkaline material into the aquarium water. Normal water changes and cleaning keep the buildup from becoming excessive.

Will Holey Rock Kill Off My Tropical Fish?

No. Texas Holey Rock is used in all types of aquariums, both fresh and saltwater. If your fish can withstand pH levels of between 7 and 8.5 they will not be affected. Of course this assumes regular cleaning and water changes.

Are all Holey Rocks The Same?

Absolutely not. That is one of the attractive features of Texas Holey Rock. Each rock has it's own hole pattern, hole size and shape, rock structure and basic rock color. Colors range from slightly gray to brilliant bone white, and many have faint pink, red, black, and tan color patterns running through them that are highlighted under aquarium lights.

Are There Other Uses For Texas Holey Rocks?

Sure! People are using them for terrariums, snake houses, fountains, waterfalls, table decorations, candle holders, doorstops, planters, landscaping, and even jewelry (the smaller ones of course). And Texas Holey Rock has become an art form in many parts of the country. Because of the unusual creation method in nature, many Holey Rocks take on a resemblance to common items. This can be compared to cloud formations looking like animals or other objects. (When such a piece is found it is offered as a Decorative Rock and demands higher pricing.) Their use is only limited by your imagination.

How Many Holey Rocks Should Be Used?

Beauty is truly in the eye of the beholder when it comes to Texas Holey Rocks. In an aquarium environment some keepers and breeders want the entire tank to be filled with rock. Lights can be installed to create gorgeous patterns of various colors and hues throughout the tank. Others use only a minimum amount of rock simply to maintain proper pH levels. On average, 25-30% of the volume of an aquarium is filled with rock. Any more than that may become a safety hazard due to weight and/or shifting of the rocks.

In landscaping a different approach is normally taken. Holey Rocks are distributed with larger rocks located at the front of a landscape site and smaller rocks spread out towards the rear. Of course, there are those who prefer to set the scene in the exact reverse order. It really just comes down to personal opinion.

In commercial and residential structures, tiny amounts of organic debris are often found where the legs or feet of appliances, tables or cabinets touch the floor. These tiny spaces can harbor thousands of fly larvae. All small cracks and crevices at floor level must be inspected and thoroughly cleaned.

Once one bredding spot has been located, keep on looking. Fruit flies easily follow air currents and usually have several breeding places in any structure. Do not assume that all breeding sources are indoors. Fruit flies will fly in from nearby dumpsters, outdoor garbage cans or even damp compost piles where fruits and vegetables are disposed.

Fly elimination products

Here are some ideas on how to get rid of fruit flies. A pyrethrin space spray can be used for a quick kill. It will reduce populations of flying insects. Pyrethrin spray is also used by pest control operators as a crack and crevice tool to spray the tiny areas where fruit flies and other insect pests breed. To monitor the area, use a Gold Stick trap. These traps use a fly sex lure to attract flies to their doom. Every fruit fly caught means one less breeding adult.

Professional fly traps use pheromones combined with powerful ultraviolet bulbs in lighted fly traps. These come in a range of sizes. Different designs offer options for use in public areas, commercial kitchens, hospitals, offices and homes. Using ultraviolet bulbs increases the numbers of flying insects captured while drastically reducing the need for use of sprays and other pesticides. Use the powerful Fly Trap Professional in commercial kitchens or other areas that are not open to the public or customers. In high profile areas, the Cento Fly Traps and Luralite Fly Traps are less obvious.

If you find a drain that is a breeding ground for fruit flies, the best method for how to get rid of fruit flies is using Drain Gel (Fly Gel) to destroy the film in which the fly eggs and larvae develop. A surface spray is not recommended here unless there are great numbers of flies resting on the surface of trash cans, dumpsters or exterior walls.

Fruit fly traps are another excellent tool for how to get rid of fruit flies. Attach the trap to the inside lid of garbage cans, dumpsters or compost bins to capture adult flies before they breed. Dispose of traps when full of flies or after three months, whichever comes first.

And for those of you who aren't super allergic to the chemical that's injected into the skin after being bitten, they may work just fine, because you just don't itch as much or may not itch whatsoever. However, after doing some research, I picked up on some clues as to what might truly help alleviate the itch for those of us who are very allergic to these bites: ICE!

 

See, scratching the affected area doesn't help us one bit because: a) It increases the swelling of the bitten area and b) it increases the heat of that area, which only serves to augment the itching sensation, which will make you scratch even more. Believe me, there is no way you'll resist the urge to scratch if you're very allergic... you'll go crazy first. You can see the pattern that eventually leads to infection and further complication. Icing the affected areas down will virtually nullify the itching sensation, decrease swelling and altogether prevent you from having to scratch. In a matter of one day you could rid yourself of these agonizing little bites. Just remember that this is only one step to alleviating the whole dilemma; the best step to take against bed bugs is to prevent them altogether, which is simpler than you think.

If you're a constant traveler, always wash your clothing and dry them in a dryer, not in the air. The heat will kill any bugs that may have caught onto your clothing, however, your luggage bags are an area of concern too! Simply vacuum them down and empty the vacuum dirt bag into a dumpster and that's that. I am a vacuuming freak! I know a lot about vacuum's, so when i saw the reviews on this one, I just had to try it. It has a pretty powerful motor and does a great job sucking up dirt and sand. It's very lightweight and easy to manuever. I would definetly recommend this for anyone on a budget like myself. It's a great deal, you won't be disappointed.
